McKinsey: global market outlook for batteries 2030

Li-ion battery demand growth forecast

McKinsey & Company’s have recently published the report “Battery 2030: Resilient, sustainable, and circular” which presents a compelling forecast on battery demand up to 2030. The evolving battery industry is aligning with true sustainability, further driven by regulations which promote circular economies including recycling and reuse of prime materials.

Global demand for lithium-ion batteries surges, from around 700 GWh in 2022 to an anticipated 4.7 TWh by 2030, with a profound focus on stationary energy storage BESS systems alongside the dominant demand originating from the EV sector. Regulatory shifts, consumer preferences, and vehicle manufacturers’ emission-reduction targets fuel this transition. Notably, battery energy storage systems (BESS) are projected to experience a 30% CAGR, reflecting the industry’s transformative path towards a greener and more resilient future.

China is poised to represent 45% of Li-ion demand by 2025, tapering to 40% by 2030, benefitting from mature battery-chain segments. However, the highest growth globally is projected in the EU and the United States due to regulatory shifts and localized supply chains. This dynamic anticipates the construction of approximately 120 to 150 new battery factories worldwide by 2030 to meet escalating demand.

About the company:
Amp Fusion, based in Montemor-o-novo, Portugal, is a dynamic new entrant in the clean energy sector. With a primary focus on the development and manufacturing of battery modules and plug&play large-scale energy storage systems, Amp Fusion caters to commercial and industrial applications. The company purchased 3 adjacent industrial lots with clear title earlier this year and is poised to set new industry standards with its fully sustainable facility design, boasting a net-zero carbon footprint. This is achieved through on-site photovoltaic energy production and strategic supplier partnerships. The facility is uniquely designed around a fully-automated, robotic manufacturing line. This cutting-edge setup ensures not only the highest quality, safety, and reliability of Amp Fusion’s products but also a high output, capable of meeting the constant and increasing demand in the clean energy market.
